Global Storage Software Market Shows Small Sequential Increase in Q3

IDC data indicates 8 percent decline year-over-year worldwide

The worldwide storage software market fell by nearly 8 percent in the third quarter of 2009, posting overall revenue of $2.87 billion compared to the $3.1 billion recorded in the similar period last year, according to figures compiled by researcher International Data Corp.

IDC said that on a sequential basis, worldwide storage software sales grew slightly more than 1 percent from the previous quarter’s totals.

“The storage software market was barely able to maintain a positive sequential growth rate in the third quarter of 2009,” said Michael Margossian, an IDC storage software research analyst.

IDC’s storage software service tracks eight functional markets, including data protection and recovery, archiving, storage replication, storage management, storage device management, storage infrastructure, file system, and an “other” category.

For the third quarter of 2009, market leader EMC Corp.’s sales totaled $674 million worldwide for a 23.4 percent share of the segment, according to IDC.

EMC’s revenue declined by about 11 percent compared to the same period last year, IDC said.

Symantec Corp. holds second position in the storage software market with $513 million in sales, for a 17.8 percent share in the third quarter. Symantec’s storage software sales fell 6.1 percent compared to the same period last year.

IBM Corp. followed with $351 million in storage software revenue in the third quarter for a 12.2 percent share of the market, IDC said. Its sales fell 12.5 percent compared to the same quarter last year, IDC said.

NetApp finished in fourth position with a 7.6 revenue share and Computer Associates held the fifth spot with a 3.9 percent share of the market, IDC said.

On a sequential basis, only EMC and IBM posted growth from the previous quarter, while the sales totals of vendors Symantec, NetApp and Computer Associates all declined, according to IDC.

EMC posted a growth rate of 5.7 percent and IBM recorded growth of 6.9 percent, IDC said.

“For the second quarter in a row, only two of the top five vendors displayed positive growth over the previous quarter,” Margossian said.

In the data protection and recovery market, IBM and EMC posted sequential growth but Symantec’s sales declined, IDC said.

In that segment, Symantec is still the market leader at 31.1 percent market share, while IBM holds a 14.1 percent share and EMC a 12.8 percent share, the researcher said.
