In response to these issues, the Essendon Football Club began their search for an e-mail security solution that would block spam before it reached users desktops. They also needed a Web security solution to address excessive bandwidth consumption, block access to harmful Web sites, and help the club enforce its acceptable use policy.

The university felt that the Sakai environment would encourage students and faculty to communicate and work together. After obtaining a Shared University Research (SUR) grant from IBM, Rice implemented the Sakai environment.
