Dell Inc. recently unwrapped a collection of security products and services aimed at small- and medium-sized business customers, including network and endpoint security appliances and a roster of information services to help clients identify, monitor and manage risks.

Dell said it has teamed with Juniper Networks Inc. to develop SMB-directed network security appliances and add Unified Threat Management features to an existing portfolio of on-premise offerings called the Dell J-SRX Services Gateways. The systems are available in three models, suitable for mobile workers to mid-sized businesses.

The computer maker also said it has partnered with SecureWorks Inc., an Atlanta, GA-based provider of managed security services, to offer a security lineup called Dell Security Services that features 24 x 7 monitoring of firewalls and security devices, as well as security assessments and Web application scanning.

In addition, Dell has rolled out an appliance to manage endpoint security, called the Dell Kace K1000 Management Appliance that includes life-cycle management capabilities such as system inventory, helpdesk and application deployment. The device also includes security features such as vulnerability assessment and remediation via patch management and configuration enforcement.

“It is difficult and increasingly complex for midsize businesses to assemble the resources to protect against the numerous security threats they face, a data breach through the network, data leakage by employees, malware attacks or lost laptops,” said Steve Felice, Dell president, consumer, small and medium business.

“Dell has entered the security space and done the work for our customers,” Felice said. “The result is our comprehensive approach to security that helps protect against attacks via the network or endpoints like laptops and smart phones, and provides a full range of security services.”

An analyst at researcher Gartner Inc. said that Dell's multi-function security platform will be attractive to price-conscious SMBs.

“Given the still struggling economy, small and medium businesses have been slower to make new security investments, but the investments they are making have been focused on consolidating vendors and streamlining security processes, thus making the multifunction security platform a logical choice,” said James Browning, Gartner vice president and research director.

Goal is to simplify network security

Dell said, and Juniper agreed, that the J-SRX Services Gateways, which includes technologies for firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention, anti-spam, anti-virus and web filtering, are intended to replace legacy devices to help companies simplify security and make it easy for network administrators to configure and deploy advanced security architectures.

“Traditional approaches to network security have pushed complexity and escalating costs directly onto the customer, usually the business or IT buyer,” said Alex Gray, Juniper senior vice president and general manager, branch office solutions.

“Together, Juniper and Dell can deliver significant value for these customers by driving network security simplification,” Gray said.

Managed security services for mid-size clients

Dell said its partnership with SecureWorks provides managed security services to mid-size businesses, including day-to-day security monitoring, management and remediation, designed to improve security, achieve regulatory compliance, and lower IT costs.

“Businesses can now look to Dell, their trusted partner, to provide a complete portfolio of dependable, robust security offerings,” said Michael Cote, SecureWorks chairman and chief executive.

“One reason businesses worldwide trust SecureWorks to protect their data is because of its unique early threat warning system and threat intelligence gathered by SecureWorks’ Counter Threat Unit,” Cote said. “In addition to many other benefits, Dell clients will clearly gain from this early visibility into emerging threats.”

Dell said that customers can order Dell J-SRX Services Gateways and Dell Kace K1000 endpoint security solutions either directly from the company or from channel partners belonging to its PartnerDirect program.

Dell’s effort to offer a comprehensive suite of security products and services for SMBs has the support of Lighthouse Information Systems Inc., an IT efficiency expert based in Campbell, CA.

“Security threats and vulnerabilities have dramatically increased in recent years and organizations need to first understand what security means for their business and what data is at risk for attack,” said Peter Adams, Lighthouse vice president, customer solutions.

"A comprehensive approach including services eliminates IT maintenance, lowers cost and allows business owners to focus on business, not IT,” Adams said.
