Hewlett-Packard Co. said that Bill Veghte, the company’s current executive vice president of software, will take on additional duties as its chief strategy officer, tasked with defining how the vendor will deliver technology and identify opportunities to meet business needs going forward.

HP said that Veghte, who has been at the company since 2010 after 20 years at Microsoft Corp., most notably as head of its $15 billion Windows platform business, will primarily be responsible for helping the vendor to stay ahead of technology trends. Part of his job will be to lead HP’s cloud and webOS initiatives, HP said.

The vendor said in a statement that Veghte will work with its senior business and technology leaders “to help define the IT industry’s future and make certain HP continues to lead the way.”

Meg Whitman, HP chief executive, said that “as we move forward HP intends to stay on top and I believe Bill has the knowledge and vision to keep us there.”
