Cisco Quietly Snaps Up Network Security Start-up

Vendor acquires Rohati Systems, led by former Cisco employees.

Cisco Systems Inc. confirmed reports that it has acquired Rohati Systems Inc., a privately-held, network security start-up headed by former Cisco managers and key engineers.

“Cisco can confirm that it has acquired privately-held Rohati Systems, a developer of access management solutions for virtualized data centers and cloud-based networks,” the company said in a statement. “The employees of Rohati Systems will be joining Cisco's Nexus product team.”

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Prior to Cisco’s statement, Prashant Gandhi, Rohati president and chief executive, publicly confirmed the acquisition.

Rohati sells a network-entitlement control solution called Transaction Networking System (TNS) which handles user access based on per-transaction policies across multiple applications.

Last August, the company announced a virtualized cloud security initiative in which it extended its on-premise security solutions to virtualized servers and off-premise cloud environments.

Gandhi and Anant Thakar, Rohati co-founder, are among a number of former Cisco employees who will be returning to the fold once the transaction is finalized.

Rohati, founded in 2006, is based in Sunnyvale, CA. The company maintains more than 50 employees, 25 percent of which are software engineers.
