Cisco Systems Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., enterprise software maker Lawson Software Inc. and Red Hat Inc. lead the IT industry in providing education and training to enterprise customers worldwide, according to a new report from researcher International Data Corp.

The report, entitled Worldwide IT Education and Training 2011 Vendor Analysis, evaluates the current market capabilities and strategies of 11 vendors in the worldwide IT education market.

The leading players demonstrated an expanded training portfolio to include education in processes and applications, with offerings geared to serve a broad client base encompassing end customers, operators and channel partners, the researcher said.

However, IT vendors struggle to accurately measure the impact of training on enterprise customers to justify the associated cost, IDC said.

Moreover, gaining a role as trusted advisor to their clients on training-related issues such as skill requirements, best practices, organizational management and staffing has remained an elusive target for many IT vendors, IDC said.

Cushing Anderson, IDC program vice president, IT Education and Training Services, said that overall, IT vendors performed well against the study’s measurements.

"Education customers can be confident that their technology vendors are providing very good instruction in formats that are consistently improving," said Anderson.

He said that IT vendors need to shore up their ability to recommend training solutions that accurately address their clients’ strengths and weaknesses, homing in on strategies that close gaps in skills and team effectiveness.

"Vendors are weakest at measuring the impact of training on the enterprise, making it difficult to effectively describe the opportunity cost of spending a dollar on training as opposed to some other essential need," Anderson said.

The study also named the training portfolios offered by CA Technologies Inc., Citrix Systems Inc., IBM Corp. Microsoft Corp., Oracle Corp., SAP AG and Symantec Corp., identifying them as major players in the segment.
