Cisco Systems Inc. said that its new cloud framework, termed CloudVerse, combines a unified data center with an intelligent cloud network, applications and services to enable organizations to build, manage and connect public, private or hybrid cloud environments.
The vendor said that CloudVerse will supply integrated management across public, private and hybrid clouds, thereby dispensing with the common structure of cloud technologies housed in silos. Cisco said that CloudVerse will help businesses to reap the benefits of cloud computing, including cost efficiencies, agility, better security and a more dynamic experience.
In particular, Cisco is touting the economic advantages of businesses moving from a traditional virtualized data center to the CloudVerse framework such as reducing operating expenditures and capital expenditures by up to 50 percent and cutting cloud services implementation time from weeks to minutes.
"Until now cloud technology resided in silos, making it harder to build and manage clouds, and to interconnect multiple clouds, posing critical challenges for many organizations," said Padmasree Warrior, Cisco senior vice president, engineering and chief technology officer (CTO).
"Cisco uniquely enables the world of many clouds – connecting people, communities and organizations with a business-class cloud user experience for the next-generation Internet,” she said.
The vendor unveiled the CloudVerse framework shortly after disclosing the results of a new study it recently conducted that predicted that the balance of data center workloads will tilt toward the cloud, and cloud traffic will increase by 12-fold through 2015 from 130 exabytes to 1.6 zettabytes, the equivalent of 5 trillion hours of business webcam conferencing.
Cisco has incorporated a number of new solutions into CloudVerse, including the Unified Data Center, a fabric-based platform to automate an as-a-service model across physical and virtual environments, allocating resources within and between data centers.
New Unified Management capabilities include Cisco Intelligent Automation for the Cloud to automate provisioning and management of data center resources to deliver cloud services within and between data centers; Cisco Network Services Manager to automatically create, deploy, and modify physical and virtual networking resources on demand.
Cisco also added new Cloud-to-Connect on the ASR 1000 and 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers to dynamically identify, allocate and optimize resources across data centers and clouds.
With Cisco’s Cloud Applications and Services that enable as-a-service delivery of Cisco and third-party cloud applications, the vendor added new capabilities to its Hosted Collaboration Solution (HCS), including Private Cloud HCS for enterprises to build their own collaboration cloud using Cisco solutions, Mobile HCS to extend services from fixed devices to mobile phones, and, Customer Collaboration for contact center capabilities.
Cisco named a host of organizations that planned CloudVerse deployments, including ACS, Fujitsu, NWN, LinkedIn, Orange Business Services, QualComm, Silicon Valley Bank, Telecom Italia, Telefónica Digital, Telstra and Terremark.
