Tech Data Signs Distribution Agreement to Carry Cisco CIUS Tablet

Distributor will make the business-directed tablet available to Cisco Advanced Unified Communication partners by May 31, 2011.

Tech Data Corp. said that it will begin carrying Cisco Systems Inc.’s CIUS tablet, an Android-based, mobile collaboration device designed for business customers, offering it to Advanced Unified Communications (UC) partners beginning on May 31, 2011.

Cisco first announced the product last June at Cisco Live and made the Wi-Fi version available through channel partners less than two months ago.

Tech Data officials suggested that the CIUS tablet’s positioning for business users, unified communications integration, use of Cisco’s AnyConnect mobility software, suitability for cloud computing resellers, and an ability to run enterprise-grade applications such as WebEx, Quad and SocialMiner were strong factors driving the distributor’s decision to carry the product.

The company said that the tablet will help business customers expand mobility and use of cloud applications. Tech Data offered that cloud-focused channel partners can leverage the CIUS tablet as a thin client to pare the number of devices and lower costs, a virtual desktop client enables users to access business applications in the cloud and the unit can co-exist with Windows.

”CIUS is a great fit for customers who are migrating their applications to the data center,” said Chuck Bartlett, Tech Data vice president and general manager, Advanced Infrastructure Solutions.

“CIUS gives an organization flexibility to move to a SaaS model by testing designated workgroups, and then gradually expanding to the rest of the environment,” he said.

Tech Data said that it will support the Cisco Advanced UC partners with qualified leads, access to its TDEducation program and a team dedicated to Cisco sales and engineering.

The distributor also said that it will include the CIUS product in its Solution Center demos, emphasizing its virtual desktop capabilities and TelePresence interoperability.

“CIUS is a fantastic and complete mobility solution, but its true value lies in the integration with Cisco Unified Communications,” said Angie Beltz-Norrie, Cisco Solutions Group vice president. “It’s not just a tablet, it’s an endpoint on the Cisco network and a collaboration device for the enterprise,” she said.
