Tech Data Corp. said it has added Cisco Systems Inc.’s Unified Computing Systems (UCS) B- and C-Series servers to an area in its Solutions Center facility dedicated to the vendor’s products and solutions.

The distributor also said that it has gained Cisco UCS C-Series Authorized Configurator (UCAC) status, allowing it to customize pre-built C-Series systems for sale to channel partners. In June, rivals Ingram Micro Inc. and Avnet Inc. attained the UCAC badge.

Adding the UCS B- and C-Series servers to its Solutions Center is important because it gives channel partners and customers lab-style access to Cisco’s entire UCS solution, which unites servers, storage, networking and virtualization technologies, officials said.

“Tech Data is the first distributor to provide resellers with hands-on access to Cisco Unified Computing System B- and C-Series servers,” said Chuck Bartlett, Tech Data vice president and general manager, Advanced Infrastructure Solutions (AIS).

The distributor said that a 900-square foot area in its Solutions Center reserved for the vendor’s products and solutions now includes more than $1 million worth of new equipment, including eight B-Series blade servers, two C-Series rack-mount servers, two Nexus 7000 switches, two Nexus 5000 switches, two MDS 9134 fibre channel switches, one MDS 9222i fibre channel switch and two UCS 6120 fabric interconnects.

To demonstrate a fully optimized data center, Tech Data has included in the Cisco solutions area an EMC Corp. Clariion storage system, VMware Inc.’s vSphere and View virtualization platforms, and American Power Conversion Corp.’s power and cooling solutions.

“The Cisco Solutions Center at Tech Data is a valuable resource for our partners, exposing them to the latest Cisco solutions,” said Julie Hens, Cisco vice president, U.S. Channels Distribution.

“The addition of the Cisco Unified Computing System B- and C-Series servers ensures the center remains a premier solutions demo and education facility, and we encourage Cisco channel partners to take full advantage of it,” Hens said.

A total of $2 million worth of Cisco equipment now is housed at the facility, including the vendor’s complete portfolio of products sold through channel partners, Tech Data said.

Configurator status helps channel partners

Obtaining authorization to configure the C-Series servers is an important addition to Tech Data’s existing TDIntegration services because it enables channel partners to meet customers’ requirements for Cisco hardware customization faster and more efficiently, Tech Data said.

The distributor said that it operates an efficient distribution network for custom-configured Cisco solutions, with ISO 9001:2000 certified facilities on both the East and West coasts.

Tech Data’s initiated its Cisco Solutions Group in February 2009 under its AIS umbrella. The unit includes specially trained Cisco experts such as inside and field sales personnel, systems engineers, and specialists in business development, channel marketing and product management.

The distributor offers its channel partners free on-site trainings and demonstrations as well as remote sessions for sales and technical professionals and customers.
