SMC Networks Offers VARs A Managed Services Solution
The vendor recently rolled out a managed services platform delivered through software and an appliance that enables VARs to monitor customers LANs. The platform will give VARs a reliable way to deliver and manage SMC networking equipment, services and applications.
The constantly evolving market for managed services presents VARs with new versions of managed service offerings every few months. One of the newest comes from SMC Networks, an Irvine, Calif.-based manufacturer of networking gear for home users and SMBs.
The vendor recently rolled out a network-centric managed services platform delivered through software and an appliance to enable VARs to monitor customers LANs.
Initially targeted to VARs in the hospitality space, a hot area for SMC, the platform will complement the vendors product portfolio in WLAN, switching VDSL, and metro Ethernet.
The platform will give VARs a reliable way to provide services for the delivery and management of SMC networking equipment, network-based services, and applications, said Keith Alexis, SMCs vice president of channel and enterprise sales for the Americas.
By using the platform, VARs will also be able to provide patch management, user state management, scheduled software deployment and systems management, said Alexis.
Our platform will allow SMB VARs to service their customers with comprehensive monitoring and proactive technical installation and assistance while continuing to leverage SMCs engineering support, he said.
SMCs goal for its managed services is to deliver network reliability for customers and a steady revenue stream to VARs, said Alexis.
Our primary objective is not to make money from VARs but to enable them to provide better services to customers, he said. We will not charge VARs any upfront fee or monthly fee, but we will charge a yearly fee based on usage.
SMCs platform will offer: cross-platform support for PC and Mac users; scripting for systems and software deployment; LAN discovery capability; proactive monitoring and alerts; and integrated helpdesk and trouble ticketing. Those functions backed with management reporting.
Firewalls, encryption and access control will ensure in-network security, while Web access will be regulated via an optional endpoint security module. SMC's platform will also offer fully automated real-time backup for on- and off-site storage.
