IBM - Svenska Handelsbanken

To maintain a competitive edge, Svenska Handelsbanken needed to replicate its credit card and Internet banking applications to a second server, ensuring the company would not lose data in the event of a disaster. The bank also wanted to ensure that the backup server was in synch with the pro­duction server, regardless of transaction volumes.

IBM - Phoenix Contact

Phoenix Contact GmbH & Co. KG is one of the world's leading manufacturers of connection and automation technologies for the electronics industry. Phoenix Contact needed to be able to make accurate decisions based on the latest business intelligence (BI) data. The infrastructure for its existing BI system was at its limits, causing long delays in getting information.

Dell - Kent Police

The Kent Police Authority is one of 43 police authorities in England and Wales established by Parliament for the governance of policing at a local level. The authority's IT infrastructure was five years old, and with this system, the Kent Police experienced performance issues that delayed retrieval of information. Additionally, a lack of scalability meant support costs were becoming more expensive. The Kent Police needed a scalable and powerful solution to run its business-critical application. To do this, Dell, SAP and Novell collaborated closely to put forward a complete solution for the Kent Police Authority.

Altran is a European leader in innovation consulting. Founded in 1982, the company has three areas of expertise: technology and innovation, information systems, and strategy and management. Altran needed to standardize various IT systems by installing common software solutions across Altran’s 150 companies. This included a financial consolidation application, ERP as well as e-mail.

IBM - Vishay

Based in New York, RVM is a company that specializes in providing document scanning, electronic discovery, and other types of litigation support services to law firms and corporate legal departments. Aside from locating needed files and documents for their clients, RVM also extracts the most relevant data contained in these files and delivers this information in a variety of formats. This company required a powerful IT infrastructure to effectively perform its duties. Work for a single case can involve gigabytes or even terabytes of data.

IBM-Metabasis Therapeutics, Inc.

A biopharmaceutical company, Metabasis Therapeutics, Inc. specializes in discovering, developing, and commercializing drug treatments for metabolic and liver diseases. The challenge this company was facing was that they wanted to accelerate the drug discovery process through the development of more accurate and easier-to-use methods. The company attempted to address this issue by creating Free Energy Perturbation (FEP)-based computer-aided drug design (CADD) software. After the creation of their powerful software, Metabasis then needed to find a robust computing environment that would facilitate its FEP calculations.


German-based Fujicolor specializes in developing photos for customers across the country, and operates 6 photographic labs. Germans submit about 21 billion digital photos for printing each year, and Fujicolor realized at the beginning of 2007 that they would need to increase their memory and storage capacity to meet the changing needs of their customers. Their existing storage systems were already performing at their peak, so the company opted for entirely new systems.


Social networking sites are extremely popular, and Netlog is the leading networking Web site in six European countries, including Belgium and Italy. The challenge the company was facing was that their existing infrastructure was outdated. Netlog needed to find an affordable, reliable, and highly available system to support their expansion, process billions of page views, and store huge volumes of data.

Dell-Parks Victoria

Parks Victoria is a state authority that has the massive responsibility of preserving almost 4 million hectares of land, including sprawling national parks, unspoiled marine sanctuaries, metropolitan parks, and an array of heritage sites. This government organization was facing several challenges. First, because their operations were required by law to be environmentally friendly, they were looking for ways to further reduce their energy consumption to comply with this mandate. They also wanted to make it possible for staff members to spend more time in the field and record observations in real time.

CommVault-VSE Corporation

The main challenge the rapidly expanding VSE Corporation was facing was that its Symantec Veritas Backup Exec platform was no longer sufficient to meet its needs. Backups couldn’t be completed within the company’s daily and weekend windows, and full backups took four days to finish. VSE also wanted to extend its e-mail archiving capabilities to meet growing demands for e-mail retention and retrieval.

Integro is an insurance brokerage and risk management firm that specializes in providing complex risk management solutions. Before the company opened its doors in 2005, they had to plan their IT strategy and architecture. For Integro, one of the highest priorities was to have an e-mail system that would allow for secure communication between clients, partners, and internal staff.

Zeus is an online shopping site that sells a variety of products, including games, books, electronics, and software. TriActive-Wellborn Cabinet

Wellborn Cabinet, located in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, specializes in manufacturing high quality cabinetry for kitchens and bathrooms. Wellborn’s IT staff supports numerous traveling sales people and 400 end users spread across five locations. Because the company’s system is so widespread and asset management tracking and software distribution had to be done manually, keeping the company’s LAN and mobile assets up to date was difficult.

Zeus Technology-GreatSchools

GreatSchools was founded by a former teacher in 1998. An independent non-profit organization, GreatSchools helps parents choose the best schools for their children and encourages them to get more involved in their children’s education. As traffic to the organization's site continued to grow, GreatSchools had to deal with rising bandwidth costs. They began searching for a way to better handle their bandwidth usage, but wanted a solution that would run on top of their current operating system and wouldn’t require additional hardware, rack space, or power.

Headquartered in California, Plaxo, Inc. helps its over five million members stay connected with family and friends. Not surprisingly, data storage is a major concern for this ever-growing company. When their initial 3-TB of data grew to over 75-TB in just a few months, the company began searching for a high performance system that could scale rapidly to meet their increasing data storage needs.

Dell-College of the North Atlantic

The College of the North Atlantic is a network of 17 campuses located in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Severe storms are a reality in Newfoundland and Labrador. For the College of the North Atlantic, a blizzard, flood, wind-related power outage, or other disaster could easily translate into a shutdown of the school’s primary data center. Classroom applications, distance learning programs, e-mail, and administrative applications would all be disabled as a result. The college needed to find an effective disaster recovery solution.

A10 Networks-Shanda Interactive Entertainment

Shanda is one of China’s top interactive entertainment companies, producing cartoons, music, literature, and several wildly popular massively multi-player online role playing games (MMORPGs). The challenge faced by Shanda was that Jinjiang’s current platform could not handle the Web site’s rapidly growing Internet traffic and the more than 100,000 e-commerce purchases made daily on the site.

F5 Networks-American Internet Services

The challenge AIS was facing was that they were receiving a substantial number of complaints from customers about slow e-mail delivery and spam messages. The company needed to find a solution that would speed up e-mail delivery and reduce the volume of spam that reached customer and employee in-boxes.

PGP-BNP Paribas

Serving more than 85 countries and employing roughly 150,000, BNP Paribas has one of the largest international banking networks worldwide. With the help of PGP authorized distributor Hermitage Solutions, BNP Paribas deployed PGP Universal Gateway E-mail to secure electronic communications and PGP Universal Server to centrally manage the e-mail encryption solution.

Astaro-eEye Digital Security

The main difficulty faced by eEye employees before the Astaro solution was implemented was spam. Too many of these e-mails were getting through to employees, which was both reducing productivity and causing a shortage of storage space on exchange servers. Spam messages in the form of phishing attacks were increasing the amount of spyware and malware on the network.

Sun Microsystems-Grupo Dinarte

Managing information is an important part of Grupo Dinarte’s services, and they work with data in a variety of formats, including databases, text files, documents, images, and videos. In order to enhance customer service and improve their data storage systems, Grupo Dinarte wanted to upgrade its storage infrastructure. They also needed a solution that would work with Apple Mac devices and a network of PCs.

Sun Microsystems-Ivan Smith Furniture

The main challenge the company was facing was that they needed to find a better alternative to their existing reporting system. Specifically, they wanted a system that would make creating report templates easier, would reduce the time needed to run reports, and would provide browser-based access to reporting tools.

Sun Microsystems-TweetMeme

Most of the social media company's IT challenges were related to its staggering growth. To meet the needs of its users, TweetMeme decided to migrate their site to MySQL Enterprise. The system was deployed on 10 servers from Sun Microsystems. A combination of Sun Fire X4440 servers and Sun Fire X4150 servers was used.
