Lantronix-Spectrum CNC Technologies

With the assistance of a Lantronix design engineer, Spectrum decided to combine its proprietary software with the Lantronix MatchPort b/g to create the Spectrum WiBox. This new and improved solution wirelessly connected computer numerical controlled (CNC) machines using IEEE 802.11 b/g networks.

Vendor: Lantronix (NYSE: LTRX)
Customer: Spectrum CNC Technologies www.multi-dnc.com
Vertical Markets: Manufacturing
State: California

Technology Used: Lantronix MatchPort b/g

Solution: Spectrum CNC Technologies specializes in providing solutions for the CNC machine tool industry. The company’s best known product by far is Multi-DNC, a completely software-based machine tool communications system. Multi-DNC was the first system of its kind to enable simultaneous uploads, downloads, and drip feeding of data to multiple CNC controls. Spectrum also produces a number of other innovative products for the manufacturing industry, and is known for its excellent service and support.

Customers everywhere are demanding wireless products, and Spectrum’s customers are no exception. Because of these consumer requests, Spectrum decided to develop a wireless solution for its Multi-DNC system that would allow customers to better manage industrial equipment and eliminate the need for extensive wiring throughout the production floor.

One of the benefits of using the Lantronix MatchPort b/g in the development of the Spectrum WiBox was that the Lantronix product complied with FCC wireless certification standards. This allowed Spectrum to bypass the certification process, which saved money and helped get the product to market faster. Users on the shop floor benefited because the new system has no cabling requirements, installation is faster and less expensive, and machines can be moved or added at any time without re-cabling. Spectrum’s Multi-DNC Wireless System has literally set a new standard when it comes to reliably networking 250 or more CNC machines. Some customers who had been using competing wireless systems have already switched to the solution developed by Spectrum and Lantronix.
