Sophos-At-Bristol

The challenges being faced by At-Bristol were similar to other facilities that contain public computers. While certain Web sites are blocked, At-Bristol’s computer users are essentially free to search for any information they wish. Computers were routinely becoming infected with viruses, spyware, and other malware as a result.

Solution: At-Bristol is a science center that contains a planetarium, classrooms, traveling exhibitions, and a number of hands-on exhibits. The facility has over 100 computers that are used by students in the classroom and by members of the general public to search online for information related to specific exhibits.

The challenges being faced by At-Bristol were similar to other facilities that contain public computers. While certain Web sites are blocked, At-Bristol’s computer users are essentially free to search for any information they wish. Computers were routinely becoming infected with viruses, spyware, and other malware as a result. Programs downloaded by the public were slowing down the system and interfering with the operation of online exhibits. Additionally, the 80 e-mail account holders within the organization were receiving 16,000 pieces of spam every week.

Because At-Bristol faced several complex challenges, the organization decided to re-evaluate its entire security set-up. They concluded that they needed a fully-integrated solution that was user friendly and easy to maintain. For At-Bristol, Sophos products were the answer. The science center deployed Sophos ES4000 Email Appliance, Sophos Anti-Virus, Sophos Client Firewall, and the WS1000 Sophos Web Appliance.

Since the overhaul, At-Bristol’s public computers have a much lower risk of becoming infected with malware. The Sophos ES4000 Email Appliance has prevented virtually all spam from reaching the inboxes of organization members. This means users no longer have to spend time deleting these unwanted messages, an activity that accounted for between 66 and 133 hours a week in lost productivity. The Web Appliance blocks unsuitable sites to protect young visitors to the center, and it also helps At-Bristol’s IT staff identify the reasons behind network performance issues so they can be resolved. The ability to monitor network computers also has another significant advantage: the information collected can help At-Bristol improve the experience for visitors.
