The company specializes in organizing the countless messages posted on Twitter according to their subject matter, format, and popularity. Visitors to the site can easily find posts that may be of interest and "retweet" them. TweetMeme makes its money by charging businesses and individuals to promote tweets and create channels devoted to specific topics.

Most of the social media company’s IT challenges were related to its staggering growth. A solution that could handle monthly growth of approximately 85 percent was needed. Downtime had to be avoided, and the founders of TweetMeme wanted to maximize profits by minimizing operational costs. Securing data and protecting against unauthorized access were also priorities.

To meet the needs of its users, TweetMeme decided to migrate their site to MySQL Enterprise. The system was deployed on 10 servers from Sun Microsystems. A combination of Sun Fire X4440 servers and Sun Fire X4150 servers was used.
