Solution: Joyent is an open cloud computing vendor with more than 25,000 customers. Joyent’s client base is truly diverse, ranging from small developers to Fortune 500 companies. The vendor’s rapid growth can be attributed largely to the incredible value it offers its customers. For as little as $45 per month, customers can access eight CPU cores, 32 GB of RAM, and 10 Gbps throughput. All types of applications can be hosted and scaled easily and affordably.

The challenge Joyent was facing was that they needed to find a way to offer flexible, highly scalable open cloud computing that was also application aware. To do this, they needed to consider the core architecture of their cloud computing system.

After evaluating several alternatives, Joyent chose F5’s BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager. According to the company’s CTO and founder, no other solution could rival the BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager, particularly when it came to deep packet inspection and iRules.

Since purchasing and deploying the BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager, Joyent has experienced reductions in traffic levels of up to 80 percent. The F5 Networks product offers virtually limitless, on-demand scalability to allow Joyent to meet the demands of all its customers. The F5 Networks solution has also paid for itself extremely quickly. Company founder Jason Hoffman estimates that the BIG-IP LTM devices paid for themselves within just three to six months. Within two years, Hoffman estimates that revenues attributable to the BIG-IP LTM devices will be equal to between 200 and 300 percent of the original investment.
