ViewSonic-Riverside Medical Clinic

The challenge Riverside was facing was that they wanted to develop a new method for physicians to write prescriptions. Specifically, they wanted a device that would allow doctors to write electronic prescriptions right in the exam room, and then print those prescriptions or send them by e-mail or fax to the patient and/or the pharmacy.

In their search for a new system, Riverside Medical tried both PDAs and notebook computers. Doctors, however, found that PDAs didn’t allow them to see what they were doing because the devices had such small screens, while notebooks were simply too bulky to carry around from room to room. The final solution was 60 ViewSonic V210 Wireless Tablet Clients. Docking stations, keyboards, and extra batteries were also purchased.

The IT director of the healthcare organization describes the ViewSonic solution as a perfect cross between a PDA and a notebook. The wireless tablets are lightweight, are about the same size as a conventional doctor’s chart, and have a viewable area large enough for easy use. Because nothing is actually stored on the device, the new solution complies with HIPPA regulations. The ViewSonic V210 is also helping doctors provide better patient care. Individuals can now get needed medications faster because physicians can instantly send prescriptions to the pharmacy. Copies can also be printed out for patients right away. Both older and younger doctors at the Riverside Medical Center are adopting this entirely new approach to writing prescriptions.
