Solution: The Golf Mill Shopping Center in Niles, Illinois, offers patrons much more than just a place to shop. The complex, which covers over one million square feet of space, also features numerous restaurants, an around-the-clock fitness center, a movie theater, and an off-track betting facility.

As vehicle traffic and the number of visitors increased, management at the Golf Mill Shopping Center felt it was necessary to introduce additional security measures to monitor the retail complex and its 89 acres of outdoor parking. The challenge of protecting patrons and merchants through better surveillance was complicated by the fact that the shopping complex did not have the cable infrastructure necessary for a traditional wired system.

Golf Mill’s management hired Secure Integrations to help address the retail center’s needs. The Illinois-based surveillance and security integrator installed 50 Axis network cameras to monitor the retail complex. All of the cameras were connected wirelessly over a Firetide mesh network to the shopping center’s central security office.

Thanks to the new surveillance network, mall security officers can now effectively monitor the entire facility from a single location. They can also use PDAs to view video feed while they patrol the facility. The presence and high visibility of the cameras has proven to be an excellent deterrent to theft. Staff have already made use of captured video footage to prevent fraudulent insurance claims, and security is now able to respond more quickly when there are serious incidents or emergencies. Finally, the Golf Mill Shopping Center has begun collecting data about patron traffic so effective and targeted marketing strategies can be developed.
