Solution: Serving more than 85 countries and employing roughly 150,000, BNP Paribas has one of the largest international banking networks worldwide. BNP offers its clients a variety of services, including retail banking, asset management services, and corporate and investment banking.

Several years ago, BNP Paribas began searching for an e-mail solution that would allow them to secure and protect electronic communications through encryption. The financial institution’s search for an e-mail encryption solution was spurred in part by demands from business partners such as financial services firms and central banks. At the time, these partners were using encrypted e-mail, and felt BNP should do the same. BNP also recognized that an encrypted e-mail solution would help the bank comply with security and privacy regulations.

With the help of PGP authorized distributor Hermitage Solutions, BNP Paribas deployed PGP Universal Gateway E-mail to secure electronic communications and PGP Universal Server to centrally manage the e-mail encryption solution.

One of the benefits of the PGP e-mail solution is its transparent operation. User adoption rates are high, which is likely due to the fact that the technology was seamlessly integrated with BNP’s existing e-mail architecture. Users do not have to launch new applications, and software did not have to be installed on individual workstations. PGP Universal Gateway E-mail was successfully integrated with Lotus Notes, the program used to encrypt internal e-mails, and the e-mail encryption solution also works with the applications used by BNP’s partners. The e-mail solution will likely also give BNP Paribas a competitive advantage over other banks that do not offer comprehensive e-mail encryption service.
