Solution: Serving almost three million individuals and thousands of businesses in Switzerland, Axpo is a leading Swiss energy company. In addition to its role as an energy supplier, the Baden-based utility company is also striving to develop a presence in the European energy market, the Energy Exchange, and the natural gas business.

Axpo's IT services division runs a centralized data center, and is responsible for storing and carefully managing all client data. Until recently, they relied on a tape backup system to complete these tasks. Because this difficult to manage and unreliable system did not meet the needs of Axpo’s clients, the energy provider began looking for a better alternative.

After ruling out disk staging as a backup method, Data Domain partner Vcare Infosystems AG introduced Axpo to Capacity Optimized Storage from Data Domain. After testing a DD460 Restorer from Data Domain, Axpo’s IT department decided to purchase two of them to meet its backup and data storage needs.

The capacity of the Data Domain backup solution is a significant benefit. The DD460 Restorers provide a 20:1 compression rate for all backed up data. Because of this increased capacity, Axpo can now meet client demands that data be stored for up to 30 days. Higher backup speeds have reduced backup times, and integrity checks are performed on all data to improve reliability. Administration times have been reduced by 40 percent and licensing fees are lower, which has helped Axpo realize a cost savings as a result of purchasing DD460 Restorers from Data Domain.
