Severe storms are a reality in Newfoundland and Labrador. For the College of the North Atlantic, a blizzard, flood, wind-related power outage, or other disaster could easily translate into a shutdown of the school’s primary data center. Classroom applications, distance learning programs, e-mail, and administrative applications would all be disabled as a result. The college needed to find an effective disaster recovery solution.

With the assistance of Dell ProConsult Services professionals, the College of the North Atlantic was able to deploy a comprehensive virtualized disaster recovery environment. Components of the solution included Dell PowerEdge blade servers, Dell EqualLogic storage area networks, and VMWare virtualization software.

The Dell solution was deployed in just five months, much sooner than if the college’s IT staff had completed the task on their own. In addition, the total cost of the project was $25,000 less than the amount budgeted. It’s estimated that the college will save $300,000 over the next four years thanks to virtualization and their decision to implement an in-house disaster recovery plan. Finally, the new system ensures data will be protected in the event of a disaster. In addition, the potential downtime after a disaster has been reduced from seven days to just one, something that will allow the school to continue operating in the aftermath of a severe weather event or other catastrophe.
