In 2005, Reed Specialist Recruitment began to seek out ways to improve its overall IT use. Specifically, they were hoping to cut spending by 20 percent. They also desired a flexible solution that would support rapid growth, allow for the rollout of new offices, reduce the company's carbon footprint, and help them connect with potential clients throughout the world and win new contracts. After considering a number of options, Reed Specialist Recruitment consulted Teksys, a Gold Citrix Solution Advisor. Teksys determined the Citrix XenApp would best meet the companys needs. They deployed Citrix XenApp with Microsoft Windows Server 2003, x64 Edition, on 30 64-bit HP blade servers, each of which supported approximately 85 users. More than 50 applications are currently running on the new system, and are delivered securely to roughly 3,000 Web users. During the upgrade, the companys desktops and laptops were replaced with 5,600 thin-client devices. The solution implemented by Teksys has benefited Reed Specialist Recruitment in numerous ways. Application virtualization supported the use of thin-client devices, which use significantly less power than traditional PCs. In addition to reducing their power consumption, Reed was able to reduce their carbon emissions by 2,500 tones. Switching to a 64-bit environment increased the number of users per server by an impressive 300 percent. Finally, the centralized management that was made possible by the new solution allowed Reed Specialist Recruitment to meet its goal of cutting IT support costs by 20 percent.
