Dell-Parks Victoria

Parks Victoria is a state authority that has the massive responsibility of preserving almost 4 million hectares of land, including sprawling national parks, unspoiled marine sanctuaries, metropolitan parks, and an array of heritage sites. This government organization was facing several challenges. First, because their operations were required by law to be environmentally friendly, they were looking for ways to further reduce their energy consumption to comply with this mandate. They also wanted to make it possible for staff members to spend more time in the field and record observations in real time.

Solution
: Parks Victoria is a state authority that has the massive responsibility of preserving almost 4 million hectares of land, including sprawling national parks, unspoiled marine sanctuaries, metropolitan parks, and an array of heritage sites.

This government organization was facing several challenges. First, because their operations were required by law to be environmentally friendly, they were looking for ways to further reduce their energy consumption to comply with this mandate. They also wanted to make it possible for staff members to spend more time in the field and record observations in real time.

When the lease expired on 44 servers in 2007, Parks Victoria decided to replace them with 4 energy efficient Dell PowerEdge 2950 servers. In addition, the organization purchased 900 Dell Latitude D620 and D630 notebooks with installation services for staff use.

Parks Victoria has reaped numerous rewards as a result of deploying Dell technologies. Because the number of servers required to support the organization’s operations was reduced from 44 to just 4, Parks Victoria managed to cut power consumption by more than 50 percent, which also resulted in significant cost savings. In addition, the amount of power consumed by the PCs is about one-third what it was before the upgrades. Because the smaller number of servers generate far less heat, the organization was also able to avoid upgrading their air conditioning system, which would have cost $100,000. Finally, the notebooks purchased by Parks Victoria have improved the productivity of rangers, conservation professionals, and environmental specialists. Staff members used to have to record observations and data on paper and then return to the office to enter field information into a computer program. Thanks to the Dell notebooks, recording information on paper first is no longer necessary. This has saved hours – in some cases days – of unnecessary work.
