Solution
: Based in New York, RVM is a company that specializes in providing document scanning, electronic discovery, and other types of litigation support services to law firms and corporate legal departments. Aside from locating needed files and documents for their clients, RVM also extracts the most relevant data contained in these files and delivers this information in a variety of formats. Not surprisingly, this company requires a powerful IT infrastructure to effectively perform its duties. Work for a single case can involve gigabytes or even terabytes of data.

RVM's workload continued to increase, and the company realized in 2007 that they would need to improve their IT infrastructure to meet the demands of their clients. The company was straining to meet their turnaround time objectives, often working 24/7 to complete rush projects. This was due in large part to the fact that RVM’s servers and workstations simply couldn’t process data fast enough.

The company already utilized Dell hardware, and they decided to purchase new products from the same manufacturer because of the reliability and standardization of Dell products. To address the challenges they were experiencing, RVM deployed new workstations, switches, and servers. They virtualized servers to consolidate their data center hardware, and also standardized on a Dell infrastructure.

There have been several positive outcomes as a result of the upgrade. Work output has increased, which will aid in the company's expansion and growth. It’s estimated that processor performance will increase by as much as 30 percent. The faster workstations have helped boost the productivity of key workers, allowing them to turn around jobs more quickly. Virtualization has increased server utilization by approximately 70 percent, while consolidation has freed up physical space in the data center. Finally, standardization has made it much easier for IT staff to maintain the new and improved system.
