Solution: Based in Washington DC, the American Psychological Association (APA) is a scientific and professional organization that represents psychologists in the United States. The APA needed to find a way to not only contain their server sprawl, but to also create a more manageable IT infrastructure. With the help of VMWare they implemented a solution that was able to consolidate many of their servers onto a single virtual platform. By 'virtualizing' almost one hundred servers they were able to contain their server sprawl while realizing a host of other additional benefits, including; a reduction in power consumption of 30 percent and the ability to achieve a 9:1 server consolidation ratio. With 100 servers running on a dozen XMWare ESX Server hosts the APA has plenty of room to grow, and they were able to avoid the high costs associated with expanding their data center if the number of servers they had were running on actual boxes rather then virtual machines they would have had to expand their data center to accommodate all that hardware.
