Solution: Adlink is a company that sells advertising in the Los Angeles area, across forty-four different cable networks. What they needed was a solution to maximize efficiencies of current IT operations without increasing overall costs. With the help of VMWare, a solution was created that was able to save Adlink money on hardware, while at the same time simplifying the company's IT administration and lowering associated IT costs. Disaster recovery was one of the main reasons Adlink chose VMWare. The solution turned their physical servers into virtual machines and then consolidates them on ESX Servers. The ESX Servers are then replicated to an off-site disaster recovery location. If there were ever to be a disaster of some sort, then Adlink could restore the server images quickly and easily. Adlink realized the following benefits by implementing this solution; they achieved a 8:1 server consolidation ratio. They used to have 30 physical boxes that are now running on just 4 ESX servers. The company was also able to reduce server provisioning time by 75 percent compared to building a server from the ground-up which can take 4 hours. With VMWare technology, building a new server is as simple as copying over a server image which can be done in less than 1 hour. Finally, they were able to save thousands of dollars in hardware costs as this solution enabled the company to retire old hardware without having to buy new replacements.
