The problem they were facing was competition from oversees manufacturers was that putting constant pressure on the companys profit margins, and thus the R&D budget as well. The North American Free Trade Agreement offered an opportunity to manufacture products at lower costs at a new plant in Mexico. What the company needed to do was extend their IT infrastructure to support this new strategy. Welch Allyn turned to IBM Global Business Services to implement a solution that would not only allow them to extend their central SAP software, but also handle compliance with the complex import/export regulations between Mexico and the United States. The solution that was created runs on IBM System p hardware and is hosted and managed by IBM. The IBM team designed an operating model for the new environment, mapped out the necessary business processes, performed gap analysis, and provided a business blueprint for the extension of their existing systems. As a result of implementing this solution the company benefitted from using a single SAP software instance which provided a central repository of business data, allowing for fast accurate reporting and rapid response to market trends. Localized currency support and integration with an import/export system helped to meet stringent US and Mexican import/export regulations. Also, since IBM handles the day-to-day running of the systems, the company is able to focus more on the core of the business. Further details:
