It expects the district population to grow from 75,000 to 100,000 by the year 2012. As a result, the district required a cost-effective, scalable way to improve classroom safetywhile at the same time securing its network and increasing network access across its 250 sq. mi. service area. With the help of 3Com and Valcomm, the district implemented a solution to handle these concerns. The solution consisted of the 3Com NBX 100 Communication System, which provides reliable telephone service and more advanced features then the system it replaced; the 3Com NJ100 Network Jack; and the 3Com Embedded Firewall Solution which extends firewall protection to at-risk desktops, servers and notebooks. Since the NBX 100 system includes a one-button speed dial connection to the front office, teachers can now obtain help in an emergency right from their desks. Teachers, for the first time, now have voice mail-boxes which dramatically improves parent/teacher communications by allowing parents to leave messages anytime without interrupting lessons. The NJ 100 Network Jack quadrupled the number of available Ethernet ports, providing an NBX phone in every K-6 classroom. E-mails and student records are now protected from internal and external intrusions, thanks to the Embedded Firewall Server PCI cards that were installed in servers throughout the district.
